SUMMARY:THREE DECADES @ THE CROSSROADS OF IP\, ICT AND LAW
DESCRIPTION:The Centre for IT & IP Law is a research center at the Faculty of Law of the University of Leuven (KU Leuven). We are known internationally for our expertise in the areas of data privacy and information security law\, new media and communications law\, information rights management\, intellectual property rights\, legal and ethical dimensions of ehealth and artificial intelligence. \nCiTiP is a research center with a long tradition. Started as two separate centers\, the Interdisciplinary Centre for Law and ICT (ICRI) and the Centre for Intellectual Property Rights (CIR)\, we joined the forces in 2014 to better face the complex challenges of the new digital age. Since then we have raised many great academics and worked with many brilliant scholars. \nOn 4 October we will celebrate three decades of our work at the crossroads of IP\, ICT and Law with a celebratory conference. We will be joined by academia super stars Prof. Karen Yeung\, Prof. Reto Hilty and Prof. Luciano Floridi\, as well as many other renowned speakers coming from inside and outside CiTiP. We invite all our friends and collaborators to join us on this joyous occasion. \nCheck out the Event webpage here.

SUMMARY:European Big Data Value Forum 2019
DESCRIPTION:The European Big Data Value Forum (EBDVF) is the main event of the European Big Data and Data-Driven AI Research and Innovation community. \nIn 2017 the Big Data Value Association (BDVA) and the European Commission (DG CNECT) joined forces to create this event fusion of the former EDF (European Data Forum) and the BDVA Summit. \nIn its first edition in 2017 the EBDVF was held in Versailles\, France\, and it was co-organised by the BDVA\, the European Commission and INRIA\, a local organizing BDVA member company. 900 participants and 40+ sponsors join the events focused on “Trusted AI on Smart Industry”. \nLast year edition\, EBDVF was an official event of the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the EU and it was organised by the Federal Ministry of Transport\, Innovation and Technology in cooperation with BDVA and the European Commission. The event\, with the theme of “Data-Driven AI for the future” attracted more than 600 industry professionals\, business developers\, researchers\, and policymakers from 40 different countries\, to discuss the challenges and opportunities. \nThis year EBDVF2019 is by BDVA\, in collaboration of the European Commission and VTT as the main local organizer. The European Big Data Value Forum 2019 aims to continue the success of previous editions\, where on average every year around 700 industry professionals\, business developers\, researchers\, and policymakers coming from 40 different countries attended the event. It will be organised in October and we expect 600 participants. The organiser committee of this event includes\, in addition to BDVA\, the EC and VTT\, multiple Finnish industrial\, Innovation and Research players as well as international companies and other research institutions. \nRSA FG and Know-Center will attend the conference.

SUMMARY:Data Properties as Economic Goods and Data Markets
DESCRIPTION:The IG-DE meeting at RDA14 will continue building on the interest from the community and entusiasm of the researchers and practotioners working with research data\, industrial data and  data exchnage infrastructure. The IG also plans to benefit from the recent Horizon 2020 call on emerging data markets that will create few strong research centers in Europe on topics related to data  markets and data economics. \nEmerging data driven technologies and economy facilitate interest to making data a new economic value (data commoditisation) and consequently identification of the new properties of data as economic goods. Creating consistent and workable models for data exchange and commoditisation is critical to facilitating research data usage\, creation of new value added data driven services bringing additional resources to research organisations. Consistent data pricing and data markets models are equally important for government funded and sponsored research\, open data and governmental data. A number of examples from industry demonstrate practical interest to facilitate and obtain value from data exchange\, interoperability\, and adopting common architectures for data markets. \nAs part of this trend\, existing business models of paid or commercial data(sets) services such as archives are based rather on services subscription fee. Quality of datasets in many cases is assessed by independent certification body or based on peer review by expert. This type of model is useful for specific use cases\, although this does not provide a consistent model to make data an economic goods and enable data commoditisation. Another key factor is growing interest in making the best use of research data resulted in formulation of the FAIR (Findable – Accessible – Interoperable – Reusable) data principles\, which are widely supported by industry and business. \nThe  IG meeting will address issues related to data commoditisation\, first of all definition of properties that will make effective data exchange and trading.
